The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military.
Overview[]
DARPA has a research lab located in the depths of the Pentagon, and has techs developed for the Strategic Homeland Division. Known techs developed by DARPA include Hives, Seeker Mines, Fireflies, Ballistic Shields, Turrets and Warhounds. Interestingly, Warhounds are marked as a SHD tech equipment, however it is being used by the Black Tusk units.
History[]
Before the Green Poison[]
DARPA's labs were used by Ortiz Robotics for their projects. However, because of the ethical and morally dubious nature of their projects, they requested an underground testing facility to do field tests. Calvin McManus, the Secretary of Homeland Security, allowed them to use an NSA underground bunker in Washington, D.C.
Kevin Park, an engineer/programmer, presented an autonomous communications tool called LINC to Mathias "Trig" Schneider, who was impressed by the applications. At one point, Park became aware of ISAC thanks to Claire Ortiz when he attended a conference and tried to convince Trig to warn people of the security and privacy breaches the AI would represent, but Trig silenced Park into intimidation as he warned him if he talks to anyone about ISAC, he'll put on a "permanent vacation on Guantanomo Bay".
Green Poison[]
When the outbreak hit the United States, the Pentagon went into quarantine. Two Pentagon employees; Liz Rodriguez and Alan James worked in DARPA Research Labs to test the Perfusion Bioreactor, a device capable of replicating anti-virals. However, due to lack of effective anti-virals, their attempts were in vain. Eventually, they were given evacuation orders, leaving the bioreactor behind and abandoning the Pentagon.
The Last Castle[]
At some point, Black Tusk became aware of the existence of the Bioreactor held in the Pentagon. Thus, BTSU Commander Bardon Schaeffer ordered Petrus Brenner and his unit to go there and retrieve the bioreactor before the Division arrives. Agent Sanders sent drone footage of Black Tusk's activities in the area to Agents in D.C, giving them the initiative to learn of what Black Tusk is after.
Throughout their incursion in the Pentagon, Division agents found prototypes of SHD Tech and Black Tusk tech that were left behind in DARPA Labs. Despite the challenges and tremendous number of enemy troops, they learned about the Perfusion Bioreactor and sought to take it before Black Tusk does. In a race against time, the agents eliminated Brenner and the rest of his unit, allowing them to lift off the bioreactor to the White House.
