Biography[]
John Sanders grew up in Yorktown, Virginia, and became childhood friends with his classmates Bruce and Mike at twelve years old. The three boys often spent time at Potomac Park, where they decided to build a treehouse together; however, their progress was slow until they met Janis McGee, who helped them steal tools and supplies. She later introduced them to her younger brother, David.
Together, they helped Janis protect David from their abusive father, Dick. One day, however, However, one night, the police found both Dick and David dead in their home, and Janis gone. Before vanishing, she sent the boys a cryptic farewell message via beeper, promising to contact them soon.
As years passed, the three friends drifted apart, although they always met once a year to fix the treehouse and commemorate Janis. John isolated himself from society, becoming obsessed with survivalism and stockpiling weapons and supplies.
After the Green Poison hit Washington, D.C., he joined the Hyenas and became friends with Jaw, a member of the Hyena Council.
Tom Clancy's The Division: Remission[]
When Mike and his neighbors were abducted by the Hyenas and taken to the Lincoln Memorial for a public execution, he used a beeper to message Bruce and John for help. John rushed to the Memorial, but was surprised to discover Bruce, now a Division agent, had arrived first and already rescued Mike and the other hostages. En route to the Theater Settlement, Mike contacted John, asking him to extract his family from a panic room in his house in Mount Vernon Square.
John arrived at Mike's home to discover other Hyenas attempting to break into the panic room. He attempted to leverage his friendship with Jaw to deter them, but when they ignored him, he killed them all and rescued Mike's wife and daughter from inside the panic room. As they gathered supplies and prepared to escape, a stray bullet pierced Mike's backpack that John was carrying; to his shock, he found Janis's old beeper and butterfly knife inside. Desperate for answers, he began devising a method to extract Mike from the Theater and question him.
Returning to the Hyenas' stronghold, John was seized by the other Hyenas and brought before Jaw to account for killing his fellow pack members. John lied that they interfered with his plan to trick Mike into believing his family was being held hostage, then use him as an insider to raid the Theater Settlement. Intrigued, Jaw tempted John with a seat on the Hyena Council if his plan succeeded. John then contacted Mike, forcing him to reveal information about the Theater's security and guard rotations.
A week later, John used Janis's beeper to contact Bruce, luring him to their childhood treehouse in Potomac Park. Inside, he knocked Bruce unconscious and left him tied up. He then proceeded to attack the Theater Settlement alongside the other Hyenas, stealing most of its food supplies and taking Mike back with him. After being grievously wounded in an explosion, Division agent Katy witnessed Mike talking to John after the attack, and informed Bruce when he returned the next day.
At an abandoned clinic, John interrogated Mike about finding Janis's belongings in his backpack. Mike confessed to fatally stabbing Janis by accident during a fight with Dick, then impersonated her final message and buried her body beneath their treehouse. Upon hearing explosions outside, Mike begged to be killed rather than face Bruce, and John stabbed him to death.
Bruce discovered John standing over Mike's body and shot him. After sharing the truth about Janis, John reveals he had been helping Mike by saving his family, and that he lured Bruce away from the Theater to protect him from the Hyenas' attack. With his dying breath, he asked to be buried next to Janis.
Afterwards, Bruce buried John beside Mike and Janis under the treehouse and erected crosses on their graves, hanging their childhood beepers on each one.
