Doctor Joshua Summers was the Barber and Medic of the Base of Operations Staff, and later revealed to be the mole who was working for Natalya Sokolova.
In-Game Description[]
A self-described workaholic, Joshua Summers is in high demand. His medical skills and devotion to his work make him a welcome sight, even if his bedside manner is somewhat lacking.
History[]
Prior to the Green Poison outbreak, Joshua Summers was an actor who undertook gigs in TV Shows, including a medical drama show called Summer's Way. However, his work didn't put him into the huge spotlight on the entertainment industry, which would turn out to his advantage by the time the Dollar Flu ravaged Washington, D.C.
Without the internet or easily accessible network for information for people to use, Summers used the medical skills he learned from his gig in Summer's Way, and became a Physician, where he was hired by the Campus Settlement. With the collapse of medical infrastructure, his so-called medical credentials wasn't called into question, as people were desperate for anyone who knows their way through medical aid.
Additionally, he learned a thing or two about applying tattoos and doing haircuts, probably from his acting gigs, which helped for anyone who needed a haircut or a tattoo.
During the Division's effort to restore the SHD Network and retaking Washington, D.C., Joshua Summers was recruited as part of the Base of Operations staffs in the White House. His duties involved caring for the sick and injured in the med-bay, and on occasion doing haircuts and applying tattoos for Division agents resting up at the BoO.
Even after several missions that agents conducted, Summers made time to work on their haircuts and tattoos.
When the Division brought Bardon Schaeffer's unconscious body to the White House, Summers was put in as the caretaker for the former BTSU commander.
The Mole[]
At some point, Dr. Summers agreed to work as a mole for Natalya Sokolova, on behalf of Black Tusk, with orders to keep Bardon Schaeffer in a coma. After the first group of civilians including Mari Singh were rescued from Black Tusk's custody, a BT recon drone was spotting Manny, Mari, and Wally discussing their next steps. During that recon, one of the commanders informed Sokolova that her asset is in place and awaits her orders, probably referring to Summers.
And during the Division's hunt for truth to find Rogue Agent Alani Kelso in DC, they recovered a comm where it involved Bridgette "Viper" Douglas and Schaeffer discussing Nat's mole and speculating who it might be, with Viper expressing concern that it's more than one mole, speculating that one of them could be a former actor that Nat hired. Her concern was proven correct.
While the agents were busy recovering the Mobile SHD Server against True Sons in Roosevelt Island, Kelso infiltrated her way to the White House's medbay to wake Schaeffer up by injecting an adrenaline stim. She lured Summers there, then threw a knife at his throat and shot him in the head, ending his life. However, Manny Ortega intercepted Kelso, but put the doctor's death aside when Schaeffer had finally woken up from his two-month coma.
Crossroads[]
During one of the debriefings that Bardon Schaeffer had with Manny Ortega, the former revealed to the latter that Joshua Summers was an actor in a frustrating discussion how it should've been a red flag to Manny that Summers firstly used a crash cart to restart someone's heart instead of a CPR, compromising his "medical credentials".
Schaeffer then mentioned Summer's Way, the medical drama that Summers acted in. Manny, however, never heard of it in the first place.
---
Why did Summers betray the Division and the JTF and worked for Black Tusk, is still up in the air. The first speculation involves his apprehension about Schaeffer being an ally, hence why he gladly agreed to work for Black Tusk to keep the former BTSU officer from waking up, as he was meant to wake up after the Division apprehended him at Coney Island, then stabilized in the White House's Sick Bay.
Though, a second and most probable speculation is his bitterness over his acting credentials. Given the technological advantage that Natalya Sokolova and her Black Tusk has, it's possible that she learned of Summers' acting credentials, then called him up through proxy and hired him to act as a mole on behalf of Black Tusk, using his fake medical credentials as an insider.
Regardless, Agent Kelso killed Summers, which was a boon for The Division and a setback for the Black Tusk. Still, the fact that no one at the D.C BoO knew about Summers' deception until after his death might lead some folks asking who can be trusted.
Trivia[]
- Joshua Summers' silhouette can be seen in the keyart for Burden of Truth, which gave a first hint that Summers was the mole.
- In the ninth comm from Y6S3 Burden of Truth titled "Asset", Bridgette "Viper" Douglas and Bardon Schaeffer discussed on who is Nat's mole working in D.C, with Viper speculating it could be a college student who took a summer internship at Sokolov Concern, one of Cal's Hunters, or even an actor that Nat hired for all she knows.
- This fits well with Joshua Summers, as he was an actor prior to the Green Poison outbreak.
