The M16A2 is a Rifle in Tom Clancy's The Division 2.

All variants of this weapon can be obtained from enemies, vendors, weapon chests, Sealed Caches, and any area/mission with Rifles as targeted loot.

Replicas of the M16A2 can be crafted using its BlueprintBlueprint, which can be acquired from Projects, Summit Challenges, or Control Points of Alert Level 3 or higher.

History[]

The M16A2 is a Cold War-era assault rifle manufactured by Colt, adopted by the United States military in 1964 for use in the Vietnam War. It is an improved version of the M16A1, developed for the U.S. Marine Corps based on combat experience in Vietnam. Outwardly, the A2 looks similar to its predecessor, distinguishable only by small details like the notch on its pistol grip or rounded forend.

One of its most notable alterations was the removal of automatic fire, replaced with a three-round burst setting meant to prevent inexperienced users from wasting ammunition. This change was reverted in the later M16A3 model, as well as future iterations. It also featured quality-of-life improvements for soldiers in the field, such as a brass deflector to allow for left-handed shooting and a closed-bottom flash hider to avoid kicking up dirt when firing the weapon prone.

Usage[]

The M16A2 has the dubious honor of being Tom Clancy The Division 2’s sole burst-fire weapon (excluding Exotic weapons like Merciless). Its unique firing pattern is meant to promote accuracy and trigger discipline, but getting a tight shot grouping past a dozen meters is nearly impossible. The slow cadence and upwards pull means a portion of every burst will hit above its point of aim - a behavior that only worsens at range.

Unlike other Rifles, aiming for headshots with the M16A2 is wasteful, as any shots past the first may miss entirely. The only sure way to ensure shot accuracy is to aim at center mass, letting the recoil naturally ‘walk’ the crosshairs up to a target’s neck and head. Agents are therefore better off investing in Critical Hits via Talents like Boomerang, which capitalize on the weapon’s comparatively high rate of fire and reward consistency over marksmanship.

M16A2 Blueprint[]

The M16A2 was designed to fire in bursts for greater accuracy at medium range, which helps conserve ammunition in the field.
