History[]
The MP5 is German 9mm submachine gun produced by Heckler & Koch in 1966, at the behest of the West German Bundeswehr, or federal defense forces. It uses the same roller-delayed blowback system as H&K's previous G3 battle rifle, and was initially issued with the straight stick magazines seen on the MP5 ST in-game. These were later replaced by its iconic curved magazines, as the gun received numerous design updates throughout its life. The versions in Tom Clancy's The Division 2 are based on the later A2 and A5 iterations.
The weapon was highlighted during the 1980 Iranian Hostage Crisis when used by British Special Air Service operatives, gaining a global reputation as a gun for elite special forces. However, the proliferation of 9mm-resistant body armor slowly diminished the MP5's presence in conflict zones, and led H&K to develop the armor-piercing MP7.
Usage[]
The MP5 and its variants strike a good balance of power and accuracy, with a variety of attachment slots to adapt to any scenario and shore up Critical Hit Chance or Damage missing from an agent's Gear.
Its performance features mild recoil and primarily vertical reticle bloom that might cause body shots to hit the head or legs, but seldom miss outright. Short bursts maintain tight shot groupings (especially with an Optic added), while fully automatic fire causes the gun's aim to drift diagonally, which takes practice to counteract and complicates distance shooting compared to the strictly vertical recoil of its closest competitor, the SIG MPX.
