The Murray Hill, named after the 18th-century merchant Robert Murray, was historically a residential haven on Manhattan's East Side. It depicted as a battleground in the wake of a devastating smallpox pandemic known as the Green Poison. This once-vibrant, historic neighborhood, known for it's blend of upscale brownstones, cultural institutions, and lively nightlife, has transformed into a chaotic urban zone. It has become a fortress of control and conflict, dominated by the Last Man Battalion, a private military company.
Pre-Pandemic[]
Before the Green Poison ravaged New York City, Murray Hill was a bustling neighborhood nestled between Midtown East and Kips Bay. It's tree-lined streets, like Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue, were home to young professionals, diplomats, and families drawn to it's blend of urban sophistication and residential charm. The neighborhood's proximity to Grand Central Terminal and the United Nations headquarters made it a hub for commuters and international visitors. Landmarks like the Morgan Library & Museum and historic churches added cultural depth, while cozy bars and global cuisine fueled a lively social scene.
Before the Green Poison, Murray Hill was a bustling, upscale neighborhood known for it's mix of historic brownstones, modern high-rises, and corporate offices. Home to professionals, diplomats, and families, it boasted a quieter vibe, with tree-lined streets and local charm. Key landmarks included the Morgan Library & Museum, a cultural treasure, and proximity to medical facilities like NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital. The neighborhood's access to major arteries like the FDR Drive, and it's nearness to the United Nations made it strategically significant, while its diverse community thrived on local restaurants, bars, and small businesses.
The Green Poison Outbreak[]
When the Green Poison hit, Murray Hill’s dense population and central location made it a hotspot for the virus’s spread. The neighborhood's medical facilities, initially overwhelmed with patients, became chaotic as supplies dwindled and staff succumbed to the disease. The Joint Task Force (JTF) attempted to establish safe zones, cordoning off streets and setting up checkpoints near key buildings like the Morgan Library. However, the rapid collapse of law and order left the JTF outmatched. Looters raided pharmacies and grocery stores, while desperate residents fled or barricaded themselves in apartments.
Murray Hill's strategic value drew dangerous factions.
The Rikers, escaped convicts from Rikers Island, flooded the area, targeting its wealthier residences and corporate offices for loot. Their brutal tactics terrorized survivors, turning brownstones into fortified hideouts. The Cleaners, a radical group of former sanitation workers, also emerged, torching entire blocks in their zeal to “purge” the virus, leaving charred ruins in their wake. The Last Man Battalion, a rogue private military company, composed of ex-special forces led by Charles Bliss, has a presence in Murray Hill, particularly near strategic sites like Grand Central Terminal. The LMB seeks to impose martial law, viewing themselves as the city’s last hope.
